Halo Archive Beacon — 9.25.15

Light the Beacon

Greetings, Archivers. This is JSA343. The Beacon is here, and there’s several great things to cover, about the Archive itself and about recent Halo happenings. So, let’s skip the usual formalities and get right to it.

Under Locke and Keyes No More

Spare me for my pun. It was absolutely necessary, no matter what you think.
Anyway, it perfectly describes what’s happened with Halo 5 just this past week. An embargo has been lifted, flooding the feeds of Halo fans everywhere with tons of new interviews, gameplay captures, and information from numerous sources.

Part of the focus was on the mission Blue Team, covered in text a while back by Ready Up Live, and now available with gameplay highlights from around the mission. Kicking of with Blue Team’s introductory cutscene, just as epic in it’s own way as Osiris’ opening cinematic, and following Chief and his fellow Spartans, his family, deep into the Argent Moon. While significant plot spoilers were kept under wrap, we still see the characterization and subtle interactions of this team, setting up for the conditions driving them to go AWOL.

The other campaign focus was for the eleventh mission of the game, Enemy Lines. Here we finally get a name and purpose for the massive Covenant machine we saw so long ago in a trailer at E3, and an interesting look at a seemingly significant plot point for Osiris’ mission. The Kraken is an enormous war platform, similar to the Covenant Scarabs witnessed in the past. The Arbiter’s Swords of Sanghelios do battle with it from the air as Osiris races it on the ground. I’ll let you see the details for yourself.

In addition to campaign pieces, we’ve gotten a plethora of new Arena gameplay footage, and further confirmation and detailed looks at Halo 5’s REQ system and the various armors and cosmetics accompanying it.

Recently, the Archive released a Q&A video directed at the Archive’s origins as a site. Community Manager Gob and Admins Mendicant Bias and Media Bias looked at some of the community inquiries and held a discussion, covering a variety of topics looking into how the Archive started, where it’s come, and where they hope it can go. It’s the first of hopefully many, so feedback is welcome, but I think it went quite well. Check it out here.

The Light of Truth

In addition to Halo 5 reveals (which is only about a month away!!), more pieces of fiction are also entering the scene. Respectively, Halo: Last Light and Hunt the Truth: Season 2. Last Light reunites us with Blue Team after the events of Halo: Glasslands, and explores some interesting new paths in the story. It’s a great read. Then there’s Hunt the Truth, which was monumental in how it expanded ONI in a new, digestible way and started the mysterious struggle behind Halo 5’s story. Who is friend, and who is foe? Season 2 started off running, and it’s only going to get more intense from here, with direct tie-ins to Halo 5. Very exciting stuff.

Time to see some fancy new profile colors around the forum, with this cycle’s maturations!

Have a nice day.
